LOST Episode 6X14: The Candidtate—Observations

May 7th, 2010 by ESBaker

My apologies for my absence. I’ve been plagued by writer’s block. I am just glad that, hopefully, the writer’s block left me.—ESBaker

What an episode. Today it’s Friday, three days have passed since I saw this LOST episode for the first time (I have rewatched it at least 6 times), and my jaw is still on the floor.

First of all, let me get some things off my mind. One of my jobs when I was a Freshmen in college was that of a dental assistant. Because of that former career, I look at people’s teeth a lot. So, it baffles my mind that Jack, who is supposedly the son of a successful spinal surgeon (which means he comes from money) has crooked teeth. As the son of a wealthy doctor, Jack would have had braces in his mouth by age 12 or 13.

Another bone of contention is Bernard. As a dentist, he too, should not have crooked teeth. Dentists don’t have crooked teeth. LOL. Of course, all of this is minor compared with Jack’s major breach of doctor’s behavior in this particular episode.

So unto my observations, Jack has not changed in the sideways world. He is still fixing things and adamant about it. He wants to fix John. He wants John to walk. But John does not want to go through the surgery. We will find out later why, but frankly, I don’t buy it.

When John refuses to go through the surgery that Jack is offering, he goes to Bernard (John’s dentist, or at least the dentist who did some emergency oral surgery on John when he had the accident that made him paraplegic 3 years earlier) for further information about the accident. It struck me strange that Bernard was in the same airplane that John was in (Oceanic 815), yet John didn’t recognize him or acknowledge that he was on the plane. Really weird.

[MIKE]

One has to wonder what the 8th season of the hit FOX show 24 would have looked like with just a few writing alterations and a couple of character additions this year. Well, you know what? It would have a lot like this episode—episode 18, of 24 season 8. Ultra-solid pacing, lots of information, the full spectrum of acting across the board, and even the introduction of characters you love to hate from previous seasons!

A fan recently wrote in with a quote that feels terribly appropriate, as we launch this episode of the 2GuysTalking 24 podcast, reviewing episode 18. It reads, “It looks like Palmer will go down as the only president on 24 that truly got what Jack Bauer is. He’s the only one who really understood that Jack is the ‘break glass in case of emergency and get the hell out of the way’ kind of guy. President Taylor is about to see what makes Jack ‘Jack, the relentless pursuit of justice that steamrolls whoever gets in its way—terrorist or president.”

And with that, we start the episode 18 review of 24 season 8 here, on the 2GuysTalking 24 podcast! Sponsored by Sprint’s Relay Missouri, Acoustica’s Mixcraft recording software, and Ability Interpreting.

Public Relations (PR) - What is It?

(Small Business Communications Podcast Intro begins: typewriter feeding in paper is heard. The typewriter’s guide arm slaps into place. Typing begins as the music begins to fade in…) Small businesses are one vital component of the American economy that manage to weather any financial storm. They are the foundation of what makes opportunities for millions each and every day. My name is Kent Martin. I’ve seen just about every kind of business model there is over the years. Some are strong, others have endured and some - well - if there weren’t bad ones we couldn’t understand how great the good ones are, right? So join me as I share perspectives, theories and outright facts about how businesses both large and small communicate and how YOU can strengthen and improve your company communications during the 2GuysTalking Small Business Communications Podcast.  (Typewriter bell dings)

What a time to be in business for yourself! Yet this is the very time when you need to look to the future when times will be better. Now is the time to start reaching your audience with your vision. And one way to do it … is with public relations.

Everyone has a different opinion of PR. Some see it as free advertising. Others call it “spin.” Still others struggle to see any value in it because its effectiveness is not easy to measure. At least with advertising, you see the final product. Your audience may remember where they saw the ad.

It may be easier to understand if we talk about what PR is … and what it is not.

LOST: Episode 6X01: Recap/Review

February 6th, 2010 by ESBaker

After a long hiatus, LOST came back. It came back with a vengeance and if the season continues in the pattern the two episodes that comprised the premiere did, we are in a ride of a lifetime. Lost will go out the way it came in six years ago: with a bang.

White on Black, Black on White

Season 5 ended with a white screen and not the usual black all the episodes always ended with. Many surmised that the significance for this type of ending was to show the fans that yes, Juliet was successful in detonating the H bomb.

The show’s main creators Carlton Cuse, left, and Damon Lindelof, say answers come even in the first episode, on Tuesday.

LOS ANGELES

FROM the time that Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 crashed on a mysterious island in the 2004 premiere of “Lost” on ABC, almost everything that appeared to be true about the fate of the survivors has become if not actually false, then at least vastly more complicated that it originally seemed.

The island itself, for example, which at first seemed to be disconcertingly deserted, soon proved itself to be even more disconcertingly inhabited. While those inhabitants (known as the “others”) are liars, kidnappers and murderers, ultimately their crimes are revealed to serve a larger, protective purpose. And though it appears that for survivors of the crash the ultimate goal is to leave the island, many who do leave find themselves inexorably pulled back.

Lost’s Michael Emerson: “I Don’t See Any End in Sight”

January 20th, 2010 by ESBaker

Michael Emerson

So much for getting our questions answered anytime soon. Lost’s final season begins Feb. 2, but Michael Emerson says the cast is seven episodes away from filming the finale, and a resolution still feels far away. Emerson also discussed whether Ben will seek redemption, the extent of his character’s evil, and how Libby (Cynthia Watros) and Michael (Harold Perrineau) will return.
Lost bosses: We’re not playing it safe in the final season

TVGuide.com: How do you feel about heading into the end of the series?
Michael Emerson:
I feel great curiosity, because from what I’ve shot up to this point, I don’t see any end in sight. The storyline is continuing to expand instead of contract. It’s grown more fragmented, rather than becoming more unified. The threads aren’t joining up, they’re flying away. It will be dazzling to see. Certain big mysteries on this show are being answered. Every episode, something huge is falling into place, but it’s still a mystery.

TVGuide.com: Would you like to see Ben get redemption at the end of Lost?
Emerson:
I don’t know. I used to have more of a craving for an ending than I do now. Sometimes I think characters are maybe best left alone. I don’t know why I thought redemption was going to be satisfying. Maybe what’s satisfying is that some things never change. I think there will be all kinds of endings for all kinds of characters on our show, but maybe Ben just walks away to do whatever it is he’s already been doing for his whole life.

TVGuide.com: No one knows what Ben’s ultimate goal is. Does he want to take over the island, maybe the world? Is everything he does personal?
Emerson:
It seems like it’s the island, the possession and control of the island, but what does that mean exactly? We still don’t know what the island can be used for. Is it a tool? Is it a device? What does the device do? It must do something pretty big for people to be fighting over it so passionately. If that ends up being answered, that will be one of the big answers.

TVGuide.com: Do you think Ben feels bad for killing Jacob (Mark Pellegrino), or is that just another step in the right direction to reach his ultimate goal?
Emerson:
I think Ben has some kinds of remorse. He’s quick to put them aside. It’s almost like Ben understands that these deaths don’t count the way other people think they count. There’s some gaming going on. I don’t know if that will be revealed either.

TVGuide.com: We saw last season that Sayid (Naveen Andrews) actually caused Ben to become the evil man he is today when he shot little Ben. Do you think he would still be evil if Sayid hadn’t shot him?
Emerson:
One of the things we’re dealing with is whether causality is a one-way dynamic. Do some things lead to other things? Can the course of events or characters be changed by going back and fiddling with them? That raises the question of what are we really looking at when people are moving around in time and space on Lost? Is it time travel or are we being treated to some storytelling or narrative device that we don’t yet understand?

The Lost Cast Gets Ready To Leave The Island

January 12th, 2010 by ESBaker

January 12, 2010 - Tuesday morning at the TCA (Television Critics Association) Winter Press Tour belonged to the cast and creators of Lost. It’s not too often that a show can unite a ballroom of skeptical TV critics, but Lost has had the critics wrapped around its mystical finger for years now. Creators and executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof were on hand, along with cast members Terry O’Quinn (Locke), Michael Emerson (Ben), Josh Holloway (Sawyer), Evangeline Lilly (Kate), Jorge Garcia (Hurley), Daniel Dae Kim (Jin) and Emilie de Ravin (Claire), to bask in our admiration and answer a few questions regarding their time on the series and the mysteries that lie ahead in Season 6.
