LOS ANGELES, California (AP) — Sometimes a TV series needs a tune-up. Tweak the plots, juice the promotion and it may end up a challenger in the ratings race.
Sophomore CBS sitcom “How I Met Your Mother” is nudging respectable but not stellar Nielsen numbers upward with such changes, keeping its central courtship saga alive for loyalists but mixing in more stand-alone laughs for newcomers.

Okay — granted I usually write up BONES but I have to take a minute to express my sheer joy at viewing HEROES last night. Now, you must understand I am/was a big “24″ fan. I had my doubts when HEROES started. I gave the first episode a look and came away confused. I saw the second show on Sci Fi and became hooked. Honestly, I was glad to see that Sci Fi showed the episodes as I could watch both “24″ and “HEROES’. (And yes, I was upset when Sci Fi didn’t show HEROES when new shows started.)

I have been waiting for this particular episode of The Office for over a month now, ever since that fateful night when Jan entered Michael’s office and told him that, against her better judgement but because her therapist thought it would be a good idea, she wanted to be with him. And did this episode pay off or what? Notice below how Jan easily had the best lines of the night. I don’t know if it is because I sadly identify with this character or what, but Jan is quickly becoming my Office favorite and her relationship with Michael is turning into the highlight of the show. Move over, Jam. Jachal is in the hizouse. Or should we call it Michan? Read the rest of this entry »

I meant to blog about this days ago, but an impromptu business trip to NYC over the weekend has put me way out of commission. The 6th episode of the TV Roundup is ready for download though for your listening pleasure. This week Michael and I tackle very different opinions of the Desmond flashback episode of Lost, our renewed love of Veronica Mars, and introduce the Kim Bauer Cougar Award. What’s the Kim Bauer Cougar Award you might ask? I guess you’ll just have to listen to the podcast.
We have several minor glitches in the podcast this week, one being the fact that for some reason GarageBand wouldn’t chapter out this episode. Apologies on that. We’re also working out the kinks on our new microphone system, so things might be a bit quiet at times. We have learned our lesson though and will eat our mics in the future. Enjoy the podcast, and as always, we’d love to hear from you. Especially with your nominees for the Kim Bauer Cougar award.

Another week, another filler episode for Battlestar Galactica.
Thing is, when the filler episodes are as good as this, I don’t necessarily mind.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again–one of the things I love about this show is that is deals with the day-to-day realities of the fleet. We saw it back with the brilliant first episode, “33″ and we addressed it this year with the food supply being tainted. This time around, we’re dealing with the fact that being on the run all the time with a limited population base to do the work can be a bit of a strain. Read the rest of this entry »

A lot of people will think that the episode “Stranger in a Strange Land” downright bad. Not I. I think this episode will be a very pivotal episode that will change how we think of the Others, the LOSTies, and maybe our lives in general.
This episode made me start thinking that maybe I am not watching the show with the right attitude. I think that LOST also touches upon social commentaries about us and the world around us.

Second Opinion, this Wednesday’s (2/21/07) Medium scores a B- from me. The reason for the lower than excellent score is predictable story. It’s pretty lame if I can tell how the story is going to end within the first ten minutes of the show. As soon as Allison’s search on the internet for leukemia brought back pages containing Willow Elm, I knew exactly how the rest of the story was going to play out. Maybe I’m psychic? I also figured out that Scanlon’s dead recovering drug addict was related to Marie’s future death from leukemia before this fact was revealed during the episode as well.
On the plus side, this episode demonstrated how the characters of Allison and Joe balance each other out – Joe being the one who grounds and adds reason to counteract some of Allison’s emotionally impulsive conclusions. It was also refreshing to see some realistic fighting between spouses on TV. I know that sounds a little warped, but typically you see the humor injected spats on sitcoms, or one spouse concedes and becomes understanding of the other’s case way too soon. Allison’s immature replies to Joe while they were arguing in the car were priceless.
You can’t have a great TV program if the viewers know how the story is going to conclude way in advance. So even though some of the scenes were well written and the acting was spot-on, it’s almost impossible to recover from that. Or at least it is in my opinion.
Next week’s episode (2/28/07) is “We Have a Dream.” The psychic killer from last season escapes from prison, where Allison helped put him, and goes after Allison in her own house. Sounds like a good and scary show!

ABC is mulling a spinoff of its No. 1 hit, Grey’s Anatomy, around the character of Dr. Addison Montgomery, an ob-gyn (and ex-wife of Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd) played by Kate Walsh.

Okay, I am in BONES withdrawal here folks. I’m refusing to watch American Idol, and it has taken BONES time slot (which makes me mad). I watched CSI in repeats on SPIKE tonight for my crime solving fix. I love CSI, but it’s not BONES.
Let me first say, I seriously miss BONES. The smart writing, the superb cast makes my Wednesday night viewing list everytime. So tonight, I decided to go back and give JERICHO a chance — especially after I learned that events prior to the bombs being dropped were going to be offered. The show was okay — but it is no BONES. While I’ll give JERICHO good writing, I just can’t disassociate myself from what I have heard about nuclear bombs before. The refugees entering JERICHO made me ask: Why didn’t they stay at the refugee camp. We have some set-ups that must be resolved and those actually could get good.
I think the main problem I had with JERICHO tonight is that some of its plot points seemed to come straight from “24″ when it is at its best. I watched with a clear head, and it was okay — but it is not “24″ at its best and made me miss the sharply written BONES even more!
With that let me say — I WANT MY “BONES” BACK! I want Tempe, Boothe, and the rest of the Franklin gang back. FOX, please find some other way to do your talent show without disturbing my viewing of BONES.

Going into this week’s episode, I knew one of the regular cast members was not long for this world. But I had no idea who would die in the course of the hour.
And what I love about this show–it really toyed with us. As the final act unfolded, there were several candidates who could have died. I have to admit I was a little more than worried for Keith when the basketball coach’s wife went off to get the gun. I began to wonder–does the show have the cahones to kill off Keith Mars?
Thankfully, this questions was only left to the speculation of my crazed mind. But you have to admit, that would have been a hell of a move for the show.
That said, I think the move they made in who was killed off and the consequences of it was better for the long-term health of the show. Read the rest of this entry »
