What to say about Heroes? Since my last review, a great deal has happened, and yet it doesn’t feel like it amounted to a great deal. One week, I’m think, “cool, finally, they got it right.” Then the next week, we’re back to “yawn.” Finally I realized what the show feels like. Have you ever ridden in a car with someone just learning to drive a car with a manual transmission? It simply isn’t a smooth ride; too many jerky motions. That’s how the ride this year has felt.

Are you a hockey fan? I’m wondering if you’ve listened to The Light the Lamp Podcast yet? In the past two weeks hockey has featured a bench clearing brawl in the KHL and multiple cheap and disgusting head shots at the Junior level. As well as two situations which may have directly impacted the NHL standings in a crooked video producer, and the possibility of a vengeful referee. It’s like something out of a day time soap opera, and Scott & Grady cover it all in this episode of the Light the Lamp podcast.

The show’s main creators Carlton Cuse, left, and Damon Lindelof, say answers come even in the first episode, on Tuesday.

LOS ANGELES
FROM the time that Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 crashed on a mysterious island in the 2004 premiere of “Lost” on ABC, almost everything that appeared to be true about the fate of the survivors has become if not actually false, then at least vastly more complicated that it originally seemed.
The island itself, for example, which at first seemed to be disconcertingly deserted, soon proved itself to be even more disconcertingly inhabited. While those inhabitants (known as the “others”) are liars, kidnappers and murderers, ultimately their crimes are revealed to serve a larger, protective purpose. And though it appears that for survivors of the crash the ultimate goal is to leave the island, many who do leave find themselves inexorably pulled back.

Michael Emerson
|
So much for getting our questions answered anytime soon. Lost’s final season begins Feb. 2, but Michael Emerson says the cast is seven episodes away from filming the finale, and a resolution still feels far away. Emerson also discussed whether Ben will seek redemption, the extent of his character’s evil, and how Libby (Cynthia Watros) and Michael (Harold Perrineau) will return.
Lost bosses: We’re not playing it safe in the final season
TVGuide.com: How do you feel about heading into the end of the series?
Michael Emerson: I feel great curiosity, because from what I’ve shot up to this point, I don’t see any end in sight. The storyline is continuing to expand instead of contract. It’s grown more fragmented, rather than becoming more unified. The threads aren’t joining up, they’re flying away. It will be dazzling to see. Certain big mysteries on this show are being answered. Every episode, something huge is falling into place, but it’s still a mystery.
TVGuide.com: Would you like to see Ben get redemption at the end of Lost?
Emerson: I don’t know. I used to have more of a craving for an ending than I do now. Sometimes I think characters are maybe best left alone. I don’t know why I thought redemption was going to be satisfying. Maybe what’s satisfying is that some things never change. I think there will be all kinds of endings for all kinds of characters on our show, but maybe Ben just walks away to do whatever it is he’s already been doing for his whole life.
TVGuide.com: No one knows what Ben’s ultimate goal is. Does he want to take over the island, maybe the world? Is everything he does personal?
Emerson: It seems like it’s the island, the possession and control of the island, but what does that mean exactly? We still don’t know what the island can be used for. Is it a tool? Is it a device? What does the device do? It must do something pretty big for people to be fighting over it so passionately. If that ends up being answered, that will be one of the big answers.
TVGuide.com: Do you think Ben feels bad for killing Jacob (Mark Pellegrino), or is that just another step in the right direction to reach his ultimate goal?
Emerson: I think Ben has some kinds of remorse. He’s quick to put them aside. It’s almost like Ben understands that these deaths don’t count the way other people think they count. There’s some gaming going on. I don’t know if that will be revealed either.
TVGuide.com: We saw last season that Sayid (Naveen Andrews) actually caused Ben to become the evil man he is today when he shot little Ben. Do you think he would still be evil if Sayid hadn’t shot him?
Emerson: One of the things we’re dealing with is whether causality is a one-way dynamic. Do some things lead to other things? Can the course of events or characters be changed by going back and fiddling with them? That raises the question of what are we really looking at when people are moving around in time and space on Lost? Is it time travel or are we being treated to some storytelling or narrative device that we don’t yet understand?

You may have noticed a new development or two in the exciting realm of all of us heating up weather we want to or not.
Examples?
The accidental discovery of hundreds of emails amongst climate scientists confirming that the base data bringing us the global warming forecasts are flawed and not locked in after all. Headlines that read “coldest winter in 40 years,” “ice cap increases by 22% over last seven months,” “polar bear population found to be in normal cycle.” “worst snowfall in 70 years,” etc, etc.
For the record, in the past we seemed to have had some reasonable debate and discussion on the matter of global climate until, somehow, once again, that issue like many others of importance, became politicized. We now know that it is our political party affiliations that determine weather or not the earth is warming, not real science. It has become more important to learn what our “carbon footprint” is rather than “are both of my feet planted in climate research facts.” The result?
Surprise, surprise. The lockstep mantra of the Gorites continues unchecked. The large companies continue to pollute our atmosphere and natural water sources , destroying natural habitat in their quest to make a profit in an unending thirst for oil and mineral riches. Huge SUVs are roving our streets spewing tons of greenhouse gasses in to our atmosphere while gnawing giant holes in the life giving ozone layer. Plastic litter & other non-biodegradable flotsam flows in to our oceans causing death and destruction to marine life and birds. Entire populations of birds and fish are being forced to the brink of extinction. Our forests continue to dramatically decrease every year as man builds more roads and corporate farms. Huge corporate beef farms (established to provide a never ending supply of prime rib and steak to conservative diners) continue to allow the cattle to belch and fart, spewing dreaded methane into the atmosphere at an alarming rate.
I find it very interesting that the same sources who have been informing us for years about the approaching horrors of global warming now suggest we reject those “facts” and consider suggestions that global warming has been drastically over stated at least or at worst created out of (industrial) smoke and mirrors.
To clarify, allow me to state my official position: a non-scientific but common sense assessment of the climate story. Please note: The Earth has proven and document-able cycles of warming and cooling and will continue to have them. No rational person should insist that we are not in a warming trend now (say the last 20 -30 years). The issue that matters is what degree of this warming is caused by humans, what can be done about it and how much time do we have before we all:
1.Die of thirst
2. Die of starvation
3. Cook to death.
4. Drown from melted polar ice
5. All of the above.
Is it possible that once the terrible specter of imminent nuclear apocalypse (remember the “duck and cover” days?) was relegated to the dust bin and we no longer needed to worry about buying preserved food and fall out shelters in order to keep living, that a new even MORE terrible armageddon was needed to drive the engine of fear and associated fund raising? Could it be that GLOBAL WARMING is our new collective “Boogey Man?” Is it global warming that now drives the save the earth crowd? Keeps the money flowing in the veins of devote liberal organizations? Of course NOT! why that would be , would be too much like a, a master conspiracy… RIGHT?

January 12, 2010 - Tuesday morning at the TCA (Television Critics Association) Winter Press Tour belonged to the cast and creators of Lost. It’s not too often that a show can unite a ballroom of skeptical TV critics, but Lost has had the critics wrapped around its mystical finger for years now. Creators and executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof were on hand, along with cast members Terry O’Quinn (Locke), Michael Emerson (Ben), Josh Holloway (Sawyer), Evangeline Lilly (Kate), Jorge Garcia (Hurley), Daniel Dae Kim (Jin) and Emilie de Ravin (Claire), to bask in our admiration and answer a few questions regarding their time on the series and the mysteries that lie ahead in Season 6.
