It’s been a week since I considered using the word “gooney” to describe FlashForward on ABC to a friend not yet familiar with it, and this week’s serving falls into somewhat of the same category. What kind of groundwork is being laid here? Surely Dominic Monaghan is doing some interesting groundwork and the story has a ton of drama that begins to bubble-over as the episode concludes. Are we seeing cracks in the brilliance of a new series on ABC? we’ll investigate that and more during this episode of The 2GuysTalking: FlashForward Podcast on The 2GuysTalking Podcast Network!

As with many of my online reviews, I’ll be providing you with a stream-of-consciousness, point by point series of items that give you essentially what I’m thinking of as the show airs. I encourage everyone to take the time to chime in on each and every one but also to bring up your own and to talk more about this and future episodes in the discussion area below!
– Quantum physicist genius picture idea: We see series newcomer Dominic Monaghan asking a clearly future conquest to look up his photograph on the Internet. Simply “put in Quantum Physicist Genius and tell me what comes up first…” This looks to be the PERFECT marketing device for the FlashForward Podcast from 2GuysTalking and we’ll have some special images put on to the web for search engines to find and lead you and others to our ongoing fun here at The FlashFoward Podcast for sure!
– Sincere worry and a theory of death (what WOULD make her be able to abandon her love): FlashForward has had some serious overuse of drama and soap opera-level character dynamics here the last two episodes - that’s a given. This is one of the only appropriate showcases that really does give us a taste of the possible future and reason as to why love would “go out the window” for Dr. Benford. If Agent Benford were missing, dead or otherwise unaccounted for, then there’s a chance that her heart might open to replace something that’s missing. we see a glimpse of that and it’s the one flittering moment of drama inside of this episode here that’s welcome. Many of the people that have contacted us continue to tell us what the program is “slow” and “not delivering enough information” but the other people of input that we’re getting from just about every piece of feedback is that the inappropriate drama doesn’t help anything and they’re sick of it. Take that to heart, ABC. Many a’ program over the last two years has taken a nosedive and disappeared off the televised radar forever with the same kind of traits and I’d hate to see FlashForward go that way.
– Dancing the quirky child lines: We’ve noticed this since the first episode five weeks ago. The general addition of children to any cast and effort is always a very thin line that often gets trodden on rather than danced on carefully. While they’ve been able to layoff the children aspect here in FlashForward, this episode conjures imagery that - well it’s just inherently gooney. Gooney is a word I used many times inside of the season 6 review of the hit Fox show “24″ (24podcast.com). Sadly, inside of this episode, I see many gooney traits appear, and so we’ll be offering in the instances of The Gooney-Crap-O-Meter from 2GuysTalking. When we stack these little nuances onto what’s going on inside this episode, this was the first red flag I’m going to toss on the field for this series. There are so many lines of interest they can ride inside this series and I am going to just hope that they don’t try to turn any of the episodes into a showcase for one/both of the children saving the day in general? What do YOu think? Are we in for something more ET-based or are we worried for nothing here at the FlashForward Podcast? Let us know now by accessing our website, at FlashForwardPodcast.Com. Click on the contact button on the top right of the page, fill out the quick web form and let us know what you think. Are the kids going to become a bigger factor or not?
– Continually moving camera: Something we’re always eager to chomp on the general Michael Bay Bit for, is the tendency to ALWAYS have the camera moving. While I can’t show you what that looks like in an “audio podcast”, true - there are generally GOOD reasons to use this technique for good storytelling, also true, it DOES NOT have to be used in every single shot for every single episode. One area inside of this episode where nothing is said and the characters are just standing in place looking - dramatic - is one of the worst uses of this technique, making me finally call it into question inside this episode. Beware all who eventually direct this program. There is a time to do this and there is much more time where you SHOULDN’T use this technique to capture content.
– He’s wearing a pimp costume? Really? A quick question to everyone out there. How many costumes are there on the planet in general for children to wear? Ok, fine. How many might there be in close proximity to a major metropolitan hospital in a large seaboard town? Ok, gotcha. Now how many are there for children inside of the hospital gift store? That’s what I thought. While I can envision that the selection would be thin considering that it’s essentially Halloween when the costume choice is made - what on EARTH possesses a parent to get his son, an autistic son no less, a PIMP OUTFIT for Halloween, where not only does he not understand the context of the outfit, but that he’s going to be seen in public, in a children’s hospital? Really? For those of you that are parents. the “rules” were definitive this last week from your local metropolitan school. Let’s assume that his parent is an idiot - ok, fine. How would the administration of the hospital ALLOW or have a PIMP outfit inside the costuming options or “green light” section of their rules for participating in the Hallowen festivities that evening. Wow. What do YOu think?
- Mid/post coital admission of murder: To ensure that you’re not the same kind of victim all of us were inside this episode, I’ll be brief. My wife and I have never had a mid/post-coital conversation that was: 1.) as long as the one Simon and Halloween Humptress #6 have here. 2.) finally got to the point of either her or I discussing/describing how we were on top of someone crushing their larynx. Umm, What? What IS this? We here at The 2GuysTalking FlashForward Podcast call this GOONEY.
– Bus driver takes son/child and drives away? We called the local metropolitain bus customer service hotline to ask them a series of questions about what we see here and we hope that we’ll hear from them (but like in our 24Podcast.Com efforts, we’re not holding our breath). For those listening, if any of YOU are bus drivers, what is the general protocol of picking up children and then letting young men PAY THEIR FARE and leaving them on the bus? Are you kidding me here? That’s the third GOONEY piece of this episode in particular and we’re concerned, greatly about what we’re seeing here!
– Chasing assailants alone and not gunning them down? Note to all FBI Agents: Don’t chase a group of potential assailents alone, and when able and quarry is unresponsive, shoot! I don’t know how to detail this more clearly. While they’re allowing there to be a bunch of drama inserted for inserted drama’s sake, Benford is an accomplished clearly skilled FBI agent and has clear ability to take perfect wounding/incapacitative shots at, at least one of the men running away after stating instruction. What is the story in this episode?
– Little too much stress for stresses sake in the house: Were we trying to just have some kind of haunted house action inside this episode for the same of Halloween? What’s going on here, ABC? I thought that all of the “dead people” were going to spring up and it was going to be a haunted house, with dedicated participants and then the “springing up from the dead to real guns being pointed at” scene, but - just wow. What was going on here?
– FBI Agents acting and not informing: I make it official here. In the span of 4 minutes here, 3 seasoned, recently-involved-in-a-gunfight/shootout agents were acting without letting anyone else in their confidence know where they were or what they were doing. Huh? Just huh? I don’t get it.
– What is a B-Lynch? I’ve taken the time to research the “B-Lynch” suture, involved with a variety of medical procedures and I found four references to it that state that “conception is still possible” so - was this really something that’s a big deal or are we inserting drama for drama’s sake at this point? We’re amazed at the uncrafty, worthless turns inside this episode and this drama about Janice being pregnant really seems a bit sideways especially considering that she’s never had interest in having a child.
– Another closing musical interlude: This is the second time that they’ve ended an episode with a musical interlude and I’m not sure I’m sold on that. With the potential storytelling that could be delivered during the time an entire song is played, are we really sure we want to use that time to just use pictorials? I’d like to see more of that time used more efficiently to help use the proverbial crane claw to pull the series back onto the tracks of interest rather than be used to make the series “pretty.” What do YOu think?
– Our Experiment killed 20 million people: Where was this scene inside the general body of the episode? Why can’t we have more of this kind of content, instead of gooney conversation with an autistic son that yields no fruit in general?
This episode of FlashForward provided so many “gooney” dangling ends that - in other series - drive us crazy when they don’t pay off, but in this case, they didn’t even deliver full thought. The compiling of facts shouldn’t be frustrating for someone reviewing the show, but this episode provides us MANY hurdles inside the storytelling process of the series and folks - that’s not how a television series is supposed to work.
We’re 6 episodes into a series that just received a full order for 13. Where is this series taking us? Are we going to see more “gooneyness” or are we going to see something more in the way of solid, futuristic storytelling that takes us somewhere? We are very disappointed in this episode of FlashForward and give it a sad 5 of 10 score. There’s not supposed to be this much frustration in the onset of a series that has this many cast members, this much potential for storytelling and this much GOONEYNESS. Be sure to tell us what YOu think of this 6th week of FlashForward on ABC!
