Heroes “Brother’s Keeper”

November 16th, 2009 by KIP LEWIS

Now we know.  For the first time since this season began, we now know why the “Ink Man” Samuel is a threat.  Finally, we know what the heroes must fight and finally it is finally making sense.

In this episode “Brother’s Keeper”, the storyline moves forward.  We learn the back-story of Samuel and what he is about.  He was born in the camp we encountered last spring under  Surresh’s father’s care.  He theorized that this boy was unique among the specials.  The more specials around him, the more powerful he becomes.  With the right mixture, he could become 1,000 fold more powerful.  On any level that’s a scary thought, but Samuel is an unstable man.  His family knew the danger he represented.  He hungers for power and so for 40 years, the beloved brother he spoke of throughout this season, was actually his jailer.  He kept his younger brother under control.  But Surresh messed it up.  He found an old film of his father and it sent him to the Carnival where he accidentally exposed the truth to Samuel.  To learn more, Samuel kills him when the doctor promises to do anything in his power to stop him.  But in the end, killing Surresh keeps the secret of his power a secret.

For this reason, Samuel kidnapped Charlies to force Hiro to do his bidding.  Our hero reluctantly traveled back in time to get the information and he takes advantage of the time to save Surresh’s life.

This episode shows us another side of Hiro.  For Charlie’s sake, he will defy his belief  that Heroes do good, though he manages to save Surresh.  First he gets the information for the Ink Man.  (Ok, Hiro calls him the “evil butterfly man”.)  Then he locks Surresh in a mental hospital, so his friend doesn’t blow his chance to save Charlie.

The other danger growing is Sylar.  Through Pete and the Haitan, Nathan/Sylar mets up with Parkman/Sylar.  Now Sylar is out of Parkman’s head and he is now in someone else.  I’m not sure for one hundred percent that he is in his body.  I know the commercial suggests it, but I’m not sure.  I do not know where this is going.

I have given up trying to figure out how the season will end.  (OK, today I’m not trying to predict, but no promises for next week.)  Still, I wonder, if we will see a collision of evil, rather than good versus evil.   Samuel desires all the power in the world; Sylar wants all the power in the world, and when he meets this man for real, he’s going to want that power.   Perhaps we will finally get a war of villains; a real battle.  I hope so, because if there is one thing this show has lacked in, it’s a real battle between specials.

Oh, for a fun note, we now know that Claire can regrow lost limbs.  Tracy accidently frozen the teen solid and broke off her foot.  Now, she has a nice souvenir.

Two weeks in a row, I’m like Heroes again.
