V “A Bright New Day”

November 17th, 2009 by KIP LEWIS

With the third chapter, “A Bright New Day”, V moved the story forward as new secrets unfold, a resistance starts to assemble while the V’s sway popular opinion toward their side.

While there a several threads within this series that are interesting, I am find Ryan and the Fifth Column to be the most interesting.  Unlike the first season, where the Fifth Column was basically one dimensional and served little more as a means to help the Resistance in their efforts, this Fifth Column is something more.  We learn that they were once lead by a V now called John May.  He apparently was the first to rebel against Ana and in that statement, we realize the traitors are not merely trying to help humankind, they are a real rebel faction.  They oppose Ana.

We also learn that Ana maintains her control via something called the Bliss.  Ryan described it as a something that is like a drug.  It tempted at least one traitor to turn back to the Vs so he could “reconnect”.  He was like a junkie.

Through Ryan and his ilk, we are learning more and more about the the Vs.  They are not at all like the previous edition. They have layers.  They aren’t simply an invading army.  They are a people with varying conditions.  I like it.

We also learn that Lisa is Ana’s daughter.  (Of course, calling someone is Mother might be more of a status thing, but I don’t think so.)  She has a plan for Taylor, and I’m real curious.  They are definitely a subtle, underhanded race.  We got to see this even moreso with Ana as she persuaded an analogue of a 9/11 Widow to trust her.  Before meeting with the widow of a pilot who died when they arrived, we catch her practicing what to say.  Everything she says; everything she does is so calculating.  Compared to Diana’s short-temper in the original, Ana is scary.

Meanwhile, Erica, Father Jack join forces with Ryan and Georgie.  While the V get a foothold in the United States, as the first 100 are granted Visas, the opposition takes hold.

Definitely, my favorite new show of the year.

Though, I did have one thought–I realize it’s requires a suspension of disbelief, but there is a part of me that says, there is no way that human skin can be put over a reptilian body and look that thin and fit.  At least in the old season, the uniforms were a tad padded,  but nowadays those Vs wear skin tight uniforms, dresses, or just underwear.  Or how about the fact that nobody feels the reptilian skin under the human skin.  We know they have sex with humans, and no one notices?  It’s not like they’re fat aliens with a lot of padding between human skin and the reptile skin.  Those girls, and guys, are bone thin.

Oh, well, despite that little  inconsistency I like this show.
