Intro:

I remember meeting my “first black kid” in first grade.  His name was Ernie, and boy - did he have a trick that would bring down the (e;ementary school) house.  I remember the first time I heard Richard Pryor do a stand up comedy routine.  It was way back when I was nine years old (1979), gosh, even that it was late in the evening at my Dad and bonus mom’s house in Wisconsin (they had HBO) and what I remember most was that it felt like I was tapping into some secret, underground knowledge, because it was 1.) a Black dude, 2.) There was outright swearing involved, the likes of which a nine-year-old white kid didn’t really tap into 3.) It was the middle of the night while my parents were sleeping and I was supposed to be .  Richard Pryor stands easily as one of the hallmark comics of modern times and that’s not going to change any time soon, especially as I approach the review of “Katt Williams: The Pimp Chronicles Pt. 1″ here via The 2GuysTalking Caption Hunt Review series.

Commercials Captioned: No - With the exception of something called “Tag” body spray, all of the commercials showcased during this program (actually, only the 28 minutes I took to give attention), during which I saw 14 commercials, and one of them was captioned.  Time to step it up a notch, Comedy Central.

Opinion Review:

The magic number of this program, is 28 - which is how long it took me to tire of what was a (beep!) every other nine words of this program.  I’ve never heard of Katt Williams before, but folks - I know I would watch/listen to any other black comic from prior eras before I would take the time to review the rest of part 1 of even think about reviewing part 2.  The introductions and first 2 segments alone of his routine provided us with almost 100 bleeps, which not only were annoying because Comedy Central bleeps all of the offensive material (and it’s every word you can imagine, which I’ll refrain from inserting here) but were also perfectly captioned.  If you think that listening to that many beeps isn’t funny, imagine reading them.

The captioning for the first 28 minutes of this program was wonderfully done, providing viewers with positional captioning (the best kind there is in the industry), giving you captions of each of the people featured (whether it be guests at the beginning, the MC for the event (Anthony Anderson, whom I loved when he took time to be in FX’s The Shield) or Katt Williams himself.  The captions appear on the left and right of the screen simultaneously while they talk.  There are many other network television shows that I wish would take on this style of captioning, because it’s just incredibly natural to watch and read. Were the content presented here something other than very hateful, [bleep!]-filled yelling, I may have taken the time to listen to his “stories” that just simply have nothing of the magic, pizazz or originality of Richard Pryor, or any of the people that have followed in his live, entertaining and legend-creating footsteps.

While I can easily remember the first time I saw Richard Pryor, I also remember the first time I “met a black kid.”  His name was Ernie Rhoades, and like me, he was a room disturber.  While my wonderfully sly and sarcastic bullets of interest bounced off most children and never entertained (umm, right) teachers, Ernie had a killer act that made everyone remember ‘the first black kid they ever met.”  He could turn his eyelids inside out and say the pledge of allegiance.  I can truly say that Ernie’s regular room distrubing eyelid wagging would have been more entetrtaining this evening than even 5 minutes of Katt Williams: The Pimp Chronicles Pt. 1.
